S3 in conjunction with CRUK-LRI and EMC Isilon host the first Life Sciences and Technical Research Seminar in London.
In December 2013, S3 hosted a Technical Life Sciences Seminar sponsored by EMC Isilon and supported by Cancer Research UK London Research Institute. This was the first technical event that S3 have run focussed on application process.
The event was held at Tower 42 in the heart of the City and was well attended by representatives from the Life Sciences Community. Guest speakers from Cancer Research LRI gave an overview presentation of how Isilon is used within CRUK-LRI to deliver services to their Scientists and the different use cases applied within their environment.
Also in attendance were presenters from EMC Isilon including Ryan Sayre, CTO at Large for EMC Isilon who delivered a presentation on Isilon usage within the Research community and Patrick Combes, Business Development Manager for Isilon in the Life Sciences Sector who delivered presentations on Isilon integration with Hadoop in NGS environments and HPC Data Management workflows and their application.
Discussions were held on strategies to automate the movement of data along the research study life cycle and the attendees discussed and shared their hands on experience with Hadoop and analysis workflows like SeqPig.
Attendees were also able to share and highlight HPC best practices used within their environments and compare processes used forming the basis for suggestions on future seminar content.
Everyone in attendance agreed this was a very worthwhile event and something which we hope to repeat in the future across different application processes.
